He has donned his porkpie hat, for that super-cool look. I suspect this was the end of a 12-fret slide. Not that there are any frets on this puppy. Well, he does have some marks written on the back of the pipe, but still. Note the tenor pipe on the right, and the buttons for triggering effects, loops, etc (two black ones near the top and two covered with duct tape near the bottom).
At this instant he is plucking it like an electric bass. He also plucked it as a standup bass and with a credit card, and bowed it.
